Weekend Box Office Report: August 31-September 3, 2012
Halloween is still several weeks away, but horror ruled at the box office during Labor Day weekend. The Possession (Lionsgate) took top honors, earning $21 million over the four day frame, and also had the highest per screen average of any film in the top ten. In addition, the stop motion animated horror-comedy ParaNorman (Focus Features) landed in the number five spot, adding about $9 million, in its third weekend of release. The family friendly flick now boasts a cumulative total of over $40 million. After dominating the last two weekends, The Expendables 2 (Lionsgate) fell to third place, nabbing over $11 million, while The Bourne Legacy (Universal) approached the $100 million mark, adding just over $9 million, which was good enough for a fourth place finish.
