Paperback Spotlight: "The Money Kill" by Katia Lief

The Money Kill is the fourth installment is a series of novels by author Katia Lief to feature private detectives Karin Schaeffer and her husband Mac MacLeary. Karin and Mac are a happily married and extremely capable couple who have endured much heartache and loss in the previous three novels. Their luck seems to be changing, at least initially, in The Money Kill. The story centers around Mac's investigation into the presumed infidelity of Godfrey Millhausen, a wealthy businessman, whose wife, Cathy, suspects that he is involved with another woman.

The early stages of the investigation yield no evidence of infidelity, but Mac is content just to be paid well for the job. Soon thereafter, Mac is offered a large sum of money if he will travel to London on a quick business trip, which is made even more tempting when a vacation to Italy is attached to the deal. Needing time away and finding the opportunity too good to refuse, Karin and Mac decide to go and take their two children, Ben and Dahti, as well as a trusted employee, Mary, and her teenage son, Fremont. Soon after arriving in Europe, a chain of events begins to unravel that draws all of them into a nefarious plot that places their lives in grave danger.

I enjoyed The Money Kill (Harper) more then Katia Lief's previous novel featuring Karin and Mac, Vanishing Girls, which was released last year. I found The Money Kill to be more exciting and I was completely invested in the story, especially when all of the principle characters arrive in Italy and confront a huge conspiracy. Potential readers should be aware that they may need to suspend their disbelief at some of the plot developments, but overall the story is well executed and features many cliffhangers at the end of various chapters, which makes it difficult to stop reading. Even upon retuning home to New York City, Karin and Mac realize that the mystery has not yet been completely solved. Indeed, the excitement spans cover to cover in The Money Kill.
