New in theaters: "Now You See Me" - Starring Jesse Eisenberg and Morgan Freeman
Now You See Me......now you don't. I found myself hoping for the latter throughout this overly long and sometimes confusing effort from director Louis Leterrier. Despite an extremely talented cast, Now You See Me never realizes its full potential and wastes at least three talented actors, who are relegated to what seems like non-essential roles because they are off screen for long periods of time. In any event, the story centers around four magicians who are asked to meet at a mysterious address where they encounter each other with egos firmly intact and are treated to a unique visual spectacle, which leads to a offer for their combined services. While the foursome all are full of themselves, J. Daniel Atlas (Jesse Eisenberg) is probably the most arrogant. However, he has the talent and intelligence to back up his boasting (don't you just hate people like that?)
Rounding out the group is a mentalist, Merrit McKinney (Woody Harrelson), a street magician, Jack Wilder (Dave Franco) and an escape artist, Henley Reeves (Isla Fisher). As you might expect, trust is an issue within the group, who are masters at manipulation and that results in several amusing exchanges. They are eventually christened the Four Horsemen (I suppose Henley is just "one of the guys") and, over time, they band together for a Las Vegas show and promise to thrill audiences by performing impossible illusions. One of those tricks involves a bank robbery, in France, which is conducted on stage in Las Vegas, seemingly during the show. When the bank is actually found to be robbed, the authorities become involved, including FBI agent Dylan Rhodes (Mark Ruffalo) and Interpol agent Alma Dray (Melanie Laurent). However, the tricksters always appear to be ahead of the aforementioned agents and make them repeatedly look like fools.
The flummoxed agents enlist the help of a former magician, Thaddeus Bradley (Morgan Freeman), who they hope can shed some light on the bank heist. Bradley is also acquainted with the person who is funding the Four Horsemen, Arthur Tressler (Michael Caine), and they share a complicated and competitive history. However, the foursome eventually turn on Tressler, who vows revenge, but then disappears, just like magic! The balance of the film focuses on the efforts of the authorities to find out the truth behind the illusions and bring the foursome into custody, which is no easy feat.
From a technical perspective, Now You See Me looks slick and magical, as well as fantastic and contemporary. However, the convoluted plot and lack of focus hampers this effort, but to its credit, the final act manages to hold a couple of surprises. However, even an award worthy cast (who should have been given better material to work with) and the technical marvels cannot save Now You See Me from becoming a less than stellar magic act.

"The Great Gatsby" - Starring Leonardo DiCaprio
For those of you who have not yet seen writer/director Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby and plan to watch the film in theaters, make sure you choose a location that serves alcohol. That way, you can play the drinking game every time Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio) says "Old Sport." Just be warned that you may be drunk sooner rather than later. The annoying "Old Sport" is just one problem with the latest adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's acclaimed 1925 novel. For instance, the pacing, particularly at the beginning, is extremely slow and, as a result, the titular character is not seen/revealed for some time. Another potential problem lies in the screenplay which actually appears to capture the time period very well, but the interactions between the characters actually made some younger moviegoers laugh repeatedly throughout the film. Perhaps they were expecting a modern retelling of the story.
The Great Gatsby centers around Jay Gatsby, but is told from the perspective of his friend, Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire), who regales his doctor with a larger than life tale that is told in flashbacks. Evidently, Nick has had difficulty dealing with the drama associated with Gatsby and is currently staying at a sanatorium and being treated for alcoholism and depression. Nick also serves as narrator as he brings Gatsby's story to life, which includes a passionate romance with Nick's cousin, Daisy Buchanan (Carey Mulligan). After befriending Nick, Gatsby asks him to arrange a meeting with Daisy, so that he may try to rekindle their passionate, but short, time together before they went their separate ways. Their reunion is a pleasant, if awkward, one, but Gatsby has hope for a reconciliation, even though Daisy is married to Tom Buchanan (Joel Edgerton), who happens to be having an affair of his own. Daisy and Gatsby begin to see each other on a regular basis, which causes problems in her marriage. However, Gatsby is determined to have Daisy, but their path is littered with emotional baggage and, eventually, a life changing event that reveals Gatsby's true character.
Baz Luhrmann has crafted a visually stunning effort that gets everything right from a technical perspective. The costume design, visual effects and soundtrack are particularly impressive. The performances are also quite good, especially DiCaprio and Mulligan, as the tortured would be lovers, Jay and Daisy. While it takes some time for The Great Gatsby to hit its stride, watching the evolution of Jay Gatsby is fascinating. He is a multi-dimensional character who appears friendly, down to earth and polite, but something volatile is simmering just beneath the surface. Throughout the film, Gatsby's temper is seen in short outbursts that are mainly brought about because of his love for Daisy. The other driving force is his past, which was tumultuous and painful, but he was able to overcome it and build a successful life filled with many luxuries, Of course, that turns out to be a double edged sword for the young man, who learns that he may not always get what he desires, not matter how wealthy and connected he has become.

Analysis: ABC's Fall 2013 Television Schedule
ABC has more than a few holes to fill in its schedule and is taking some chances in the fall to remedy those problems. For instance, an all-new line-up will be introduced on Tuesday and is anchored by Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (pictured above), which hopes to capitalize on the big screen success of The Avengers, which featured the covert group. The alphabet network should make a strong or decent showing for six of the seven nights, but when Dancing with the Stars and College Football end in late fall, trouble could be brewing, at least until DWTS returns in the spring.
Monday evenings are strong, with the older skewing, but still popular, DWTS and Castle. On Wednesday, Modern Family and The Middle should continue to attract the coveted 18-49 demographic in solid numbers, but it has been challenging to establish compatible comedies for both series. The stability of Grey's Anatomy and the popularity of Scandal have been a boost for Thursday, which could turn into an even stronger night with the addiction of Once Upon A Time in Wonderland, a spin-off of Once Upon A Time. Fridays are anchored by the modest hit Last Man Standing and the demo friendly Shark Tank. Finally, Sunday evenings may be a problem. While veteran America's Funniest Home Videos continues to be popular (and no doubt profitable), Once Upon A Time has seen a decline in ratings, but is still doing well. Likewise, Revenge has fallen a bit and that resulted in the departure of creator and executive producer Mike Kelley. Perhaps new blood behind the scenes will boost ratings on this important night.
Overall, I suspect ABC has a good chance of remaining competitive in the fall, but will need at least one new series to resonate on Tuesday, as well as continued stability of its veteran series and a resurgence on Sunday evenings. I will be sampling the aforementioned Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D and Once Upon A Time in Wonderland.

Analysis: The Fox 2013-2014 Television Schedule
With most of its schedule intact, Fox will introduce only four new series in the fall, one drama (Sleepy Hollow - pictured above), two comedies (Dads and Brooklyn Nine-Nine) and one reality show (Junior Masterchef). Fox will continue to rely on The X Factor and several animated series on Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday, respectively, while Monday and Tuesday should do relatively well with Bones and New Girl. Like the other networks, Fox appears to be throwing in the towel on Friday, with the odd pairing of Junior Masterchef and encore episodes of Sleepy Hollow, whose original episodes will air after Bones on Monday evenings.
In the spring of 2014, Fox appears to be more serious about Friday evenings, with the relocated Bones at 8:00pm, followed by the ratings starved Raising Hope and new entry Enlisted. The return of The Following and American Idol should result in decent ratings for the network through the spring. With so many series being switched out from fall to spring, Fox's schedule looks similar to a cable network, such as TNT.
I am interested in sampling Sleepy Hollow and will continue to watch The Following and Glee, which simply does not receive the credit that it deserves.

Analysis: NBC's Fall 2013 Schedule
NBC's fall line-up looks relatively strong, courtesy of Sunday Night Football and The Voice, which should make the Peacock network competitive at least until the end of the year. While Monday, Tuesday and Sunday should draw solid ratings, courtesy of the aforementioned series, the other four nights pose a problem. I was surprised with the renewal of the long running Law & Order: SVU. Even with declining ratings, the series must still be profitable. In theory, with a lead-in from demo-friendly hit Revolution, SVU may benefit, but is Revolution really an 8:00pm show? I doubt it and would not be surprised to see ratings drop and possibly hurt the entire Wednesday line-up.
NBC also has much work to do on Thursday, with the low rated Parks and Recreation and Parenthood sandwiching three new comedy series. With tough competition from the CBS, ABC and FOX, NBC may be happy just to make another modest showing on Thursdays. Of course, the star power of Michael J.Fox and Sean Hayes could make NBC a player, but probably not a major one. Friday looks challenging as well, especially with news magazine Dateline leading into the supernatural themed Grimm. However, Grimm's lead-out, Dracula, looks much more compatible and I am anxious to see how well the series is received. Personally, I will be sampling Dracula and Blacklist, with James Spader.
Check out NBC's fall schedule below:

Nominees for the 3rd Annual Critics' Choice Television Awards include "The Big Bang Theory" and "American Horror Story: Asylum"
"It's a damn good thing you nominated me!"
Vera Farmiga (pictured above- photo credit A&E) is nominated for her role as Norma Bates in the A&E drama Bates Motel and deservedly so. However, that was the only nod the series received when the nominees for the Critics' Choice Television Awards were announced yesterday. How Freddie Highmore could have been overlooked for his work as Norman Bates is curious. In any event, other worthy series, including The Big Bang Theory and American Horror Story: Asylum, nabbed multiple nominations, including Best Comedy Series and Best Drama Series, respectively.
I was pleased to see recognition for Archer (Best Animated Series), Downton Abbey (Best Drama Series) and the cancelled cable drama Political Animals, which received four nominations, including Best Movie or Mini-Series. Perhaps the most surprising aspect of the nominations is the lack of love for Modern Family, which only snagged one nod, in the Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy category.
The awards ceremony will be held June 10, 2013 in Los Angeles.

The Humphrey Bogart Film Festival Honors the Movie Icon
Actor Jack Huston (center) and film critic Leonard Maltin (right)
KEY LARGO, Florida Keys -- The inaugural Humphrey Bogart Film Festival thrilled thousands earlier this month in Key Largo. Hosted by Stephen Bogart, son of Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall, the event featured dozens of in-theater and outdoor screenings of Bogie's film noir and other genre classics. Bogart and special guests including renowned film critic and historian Leonard Maltin and award winning director of "Cocaine Cowboys" Billy Corben participated in sold-out presentations and panel discussions throughout the weekend.
The event's star-studded highlight, the elegant Casablanca Ball, took place Saturday night at the Hilton Key Largo Resort. Jack Huston, star of HBO's "Boardwalk Empire" and grandson of legendary film director, screenwriter and actor John Huston, accepted the film festival's award recognizing the partnership between his grandfather and Humphrey Bogart. John Huston's first directing role was "The Maltese Falcon," starring Bogart as detective Sam Spade. Bogart and Huston were lifelong friends and the partnership led to other film classics including "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre," "Key Largo" and "The African Queen." At the ball, Stephen Bogart presented Jack Huston with the award, a replica of the iconic falcon statuette from "The Maltese Falcon."

Bogart fans Reid Nichols and Dana Karen, both of Orlando, used the event as a backdrop for their elopement, marrying Saturday morning on the beach at Harry Harris Park before attending the Casablanca Ball on their wedding night. The inaugural event marked 65 years since the premiere of the movie "Key Largo," starring Humphrey Bogart and his wife Lauren Bacall. It is the only event of its kind sanctioned by the Bogart estate and is produced in partnership with the Key Largo Chamber of Commerce. Other attractions included a Bogart memorabilia exhibit as well as cruises on the original century-old African Queen, the boat used in the film of the same name.

Blu-ray Spotlight: "The Jurassic Park Trilogy"
I recently had the opportunity to see the re-release of Jurassic Park in 3D and was pleasantly surprised at how well the film holds up, some two decades after its original release. I also took the time to watch the second and third installments in the franchise, The Lost World and Jurassic Park III, as well as the numerous special features that are included on the Jurassic Park Ultimate Trilogy Blu-ray edition, which was released in 2011. You can read my thoughts on Jurassic Park here.
The original film is, without a doubt, the best in the series, followed by Jurassic Park III and The Lost World, which was very disappointing. Released in 1997 and directed by Steven Spielberg, The Lost World: Jurassic Park boasts a very talented cast, including Julianne Moore, the late Pete Postlethwaite, Vince Vaughn and the returning Jeff Goldblum, as chaos expert Dr. Ian Malcolm. The Lost World also has not one, but two T. Rex dinosaurs who wreck havoc on the principal characters in response to them taking their baby, which was in need of medical attention. The story centers around the infiltration of dinosaurs on Isla Sorna, which is the neighboring island to Isla Nubar, where the events of the first film took place. Once they are discovered, Dr. Malcolm is asked to join a team of researchers to document their findings on Isla Sorna. Complicating matters are a team of mercenaries who are trying to capture certain dinosaurs for placement in a park in San Diego. Of course, messing with the dinosaurs, especially the large ones, can only lead to disaster.
Unfortunately, the talented cast never seems to develop the rapport that viewers might expect and none of the characters are particularly likable. In addition, a supporting character, who will not be named, is completely unnecessary and is involved in a ludicrous scene involving raptors that features a gymnastic move that almost made me stop watching the film completely. Outside of the dinosaurs and the special effects, there is little to enjoy in The Lost World.
Jurassic Park III, on the other hand, is a marked improvement over The Lost World. Returning for the third installment is Sam Neill, as Dr. Alan Grant, and Laura Dern as Dr. Ellie Degler, who plays a supporting role and does not interect with the dinosaurs. The story centers around two missing tourists who were last seen para sailing around Isla Sorna. Later, Dr. Grant is approached about leading a tour of Isla Sorna, by air, at the request of a couple, Paul and Amanda Kirby (William H. Macy and Tea Leoni). Dr. Grant agrees, but soon learns that the Kirbys intend to land on the island and need his help in finding their son, who is one of the missing tourists. Shortly after they land, a Spinosaurus appears and when the group try to fly away, their plane is damaged and crashes in the forest. They are now trapped on the island and soon discover so-called "super dinosaurs" which have evolved over the years.
Despite a couple of annoying characters, Jurassic Park III is a lot of fun to watch. The addition of several new, huge and frightening dinosaurs add to the tension throughout the film, as the survivors literally run for their lives almost from start to finish. Director Joe Johnston takes over for Spielberg and crafts an enjoyable and exciting film that is reminiscent of the original.
The abundance of special features, both new and old, is a real treat for fans of the trilogy. Each of the three discs boast many behind the scenes featurettes and the original theatrical trailers. The Lost World also includes deleted scenes, while Jurassic Park III features commentary with the special effects team. Even with the substandard second installment, the Jurassic Park Ultimate Trilogy is great fun and a good primer for viewers who are anticipating the fourth installment, which is due in the summer of 2014.

"Bart Simpson Big Shot!" by Matt Groening
Bart Simpson Big Shot! (Harper Design) is a recently released trade paperback featuring characters from the long running television series The Simpsons, created by Matt Groening. Stories from five Bart Simpson comics (47, 49, 50, 51 and 52) and The Simpsons Summer Shindig #1 are included in the trade paperback. Bart takes center stage throughout, of course, but interludes feature Li'l Krusty and Maggie's Crib, which is written and drawn by comic book legend Sergio Aragonés.
Readers familiar with The Simpsons television series are treated to the trademark sight gags in this effort that are a staple of the series, including one featuring The White House vegetable garden that is laugh out loud funny. The principal stories feature a spoof of Stephen King's Children of the Corn, entitled Children Off the Cob, which has some insightful thoughts about ethanol, and Bart's Last Day of Summer Vacation, which is particularly difficult for Marge, but offers several amusing moments, nonetheless.
Fourteen stories and the aforementioned interludes encompass nearly 130 pages of full color fun in Bart Simpson Big Shot! Fans of the television series will likely enjoy this effort, which also features Homer, Maggie and Lisa Simpson, as well as Milhouse, Professor Frink and Mr. Burns. Oh, and donuts also make an appearance, much to Homer's delight.
