KEY LARGO, Florida Keys -- The inaugural Humphrey Bogart Film Festival thrilled thousands earlier this month in Key Largo. Hosted by Stephen Bogart, son of Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall, the event featured dozens of in-theater and outdoor screenings of Bogie's film noir and other genre classics. Bogart and special guests including renowned film critic and historian Leonard Maltin and award winning director of "Cocaine Cowboys" Billy Corben participated in sold-out presentations and panel discussions throughout the weekend.
The event's star-studded highlight, the elegant Casablanca Ball, took place Saturday night at the Hilton Key Largo Resort. Jack Huston, star of HBO's "Boardwalk Empire" and grandson of legendary film director, screenwriter and actor John Huston, accepted the film festival's award recognizing the partnership between his grandfather and Humphrey Bogart. John Huston's first directing role was "The Maltese Falcon," starring Bogart as detective Sam Spade. Bogart and Huston were lifelong friends and the partnership led to other film classics including "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre," "Key Largo" and "The African Queen." At the ball, Stephen Bogart presented Jack Huston with the award, a replica of the iconic falcon statuette from "The Maltese Falcon."

Bogart fans Reid Nichols and Dana Karen, both of Orlando, used the event as a backdrop for their elopement, marrying Saturday morning on the beach at Harry Harris Park before attending the Casablanca Ball on their wedding night. The inaugural event marked 65 years since the premiere of the movie "Key Largo," starring Humphrey Bogart and his wife Lauren Bacall. It is the only event of its kind sanctioned by the Bogart estate and is produced in partnership with the Key Largo Chamber of Commerce. Other attractions included a Bogart memorabilia exhibit as well as cruises on the original century-old African Queen, the boat used in the film of the same name.
