Golden Globe Winners Include "Les Miserables" "Argo" "Homeland" and "Game Change"

Les Miserables was the most honored film at last night's Golden Globe Awards, winning three trophies, including Best Picture, Musical or Comedy. Film stars Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway (pictured above) also won, for Best Actor, Musical or Comedy and Best Supporting Actress, respectively. Another big winner, Argo, took home two major awards, Best Picture and Best Director (Ben Affleck). After also winning the Critics' Choice Award for Best Picture, it looks like Argo's Oscar odds are increasing. Of course, Affleck did not even receive a Best Director nomination from the Academy, which is looking more and more dubious. Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained also picked up two awards, for Best Screenplay (Tarantino) and Best Supporting Actor (Christoph Waltz).

The cable networks nearly swept the television awards, which made the broadcast networks look very bad. The Showtime series Homeland and HBO's cable movie Game Change each won three trophies, while the HBO series Girls won two. The only non-cable victory among the television nominees went to PBS's Downton Abbey for Best Supporting Actress in a Series, Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television (Maggie Smith).

The highlights of the evening included a surprise visit by former President Bill Clinton, who introduced Steven Spielberg's Lincoln and Jodie Foster's acceptance speech after receiving the Cecil B. DeMille award. Foster essentially came out as a lesbian and offered an interesting perspective about how difficult it has been to live in the public eye almost all of her life. She also hinted about a possible new direction in her career.
