"Fruitvale Station" Tells the Tragic Story of Oscar Grant III

The recently released film Fruitvale Station tells the story of Oscar Grant III, who was killed by a police officer in the early morning hours of January 1, 2009 in Oakland, California. While the outcome of the film is already known to some viewers, writer/director Ryan Coogler examines what happened to Oscar during the last day of his life, as well as presenting flashbacks that help to paint a picture of a young man who wanted to get his life in order and provide for his young daughter. In less than 90 minutes, Coogler is able to reveal the hopes, dreams and problems of Oscar Grant, who was a likable, loyal and capable young man who clearly loved his family and wanted to make something of his life.

Michael B. Jordan delivers a star making performance as Oscar, who, at one point, is trying to get his job back at a supermarket, but the manager refuses to rehire him. Oscar feels as though his opportunities are limited, so without a steady income, he will likely fall back on dealing drugs, which he has already been incarcerated for once. There are many sides to Oscar that are shown throughout the film, some are flattering, others not so much. For instance, Oscar appears to be a sincere and unselfish young man who helps out strangers, but can also be threatening to others, including his former manager. However, the more dangerous side is only revealed when Oscar is desperate to find a job or when someone is threatening him. In other words, it is better to withhold judgment and try to understand what Oscar was dealing with in his everyday life and then ask yourself what you would do if faced with the same set of circumstances.

Ryan Coogler's screenplay veers away from speaking directly about racism and police brutality, but simply allows the film to speak for itself by presenting a character study of a young man whose life was cut short due to a tragic turn of events. The result is a riveting, well acted (Octavia Spencer is great as Oscar's mom, Wanda) and sometimes troubling film. Oscar Grant's story is one that will likely stay with you after you have exited the theater and, if the conclusion of the film is any indication, Oscar's story continues to touch the lives of others, who are keeping his memory alive and working to raise awareness in the hope of preventing another senseless tragedy.
